Innovate! Socially. Week II (11/28)

Innovate! Socially. Week II (11/28)

DO NOW: MentorPlace: what does social innovation mean to you? Explain your current project to your mentor and mentors respond with their own ideas regarding social innovation.
Write your response to your mentor at http://ibm.mentorplace.epals.org/
(You have until 9:00 to complete this.  Any remaining work is HOMEWORK.)

WPL Agenda:

Part I: Choose your roles! (10 minutes)

The entire class period today will be dedicated to researching your innovator and beginning your project.

The first thing you should do is choose people within your group to take on certain roles:
Note-taker/recorder: takes notes and completes any writing part of the assignment (with input from ALL group members)
Facilitator: keeps the project moving by managing time, reading directions and keeping group members on task (also makes sure each member's voice is heard)
Process-observer: takes note of how the group is interacting with each other and notices what strategies are working for the group and if any issues come up
Active listener: makes eye contact, observes each member of the group, brainstorms ideas to help with the project and respectfully tells them to the group

Part II: Complete the following guide using research that you did for homework.  Be sure that your group's recorder writes or types the information you find and also records the websites where you find information. (90 minutes)

TASK

Each group will complete a biographical sketch of their chosen innovator, including background, challenges and successes. In addition, choose one project or effort that you think is the most significant achievement by this person. After completing this sketch, groups will begin to use the information to create a presentation. Each group will choose one innovation to concentrate on--this can be an organization, a movement, or a product for which the person is known.

Groups will submit power point presentations on the process of the selected achievement, including a timeline, challenges, needed inputs and the final outcomes.

Guiding Question for your presentation:
What does it take to create something that has an impact?

Why is this important?

How does it have effects beyond the immediate?

Groups should choose one or two main reasons why this achievement matters. We can ask students to present this or simply submit slides as the final product. Its important that all students are contributing to the content of this, rather than concentrating only on technology or powerpoint.
Groupwork: powerpoint, most important achievement and why
-what resources were available/used (e.g. University research help, money, team, etc)
-what obstacles were faced in trying to realize the achievement?
-what was the biggest outcome of the project? What changed as a result? (e.g. New forum for black rep in media (BET), new
--finally, as a group: why does it matter? What happened as a result of the achievement that makes it important to us today?

Biographical Sketch and Presentation Format
I.      Introduction
·      Define “innovation” and what aspect of innovation you will
focus on with the subject of your project
·      Give pedigree information for your innovator (full name, place of birth, where
living when the innovation was conceived, age (or age
range) at the time of the innovative breakthrough)
·      Short review of the subject – where has she or he paid his or
her dues in the field of the innovation?
·      Attention-grabbing summary of what they did and why it was
impactful

II.      Motivating Factors and Background Information
·      Highlight what piqued (stimulated) the innovators interest in the
field of the innovation
·      What social factors, if any, contributed – gender, race,
socioeconomic condition, etc.
·      Which mentors or forerunners, if any, contributed to the
accomplishment(s)?
·      What was it that he or she discovered or perfected that
achieved the breakthrough?
·      How much failure, setback and discouragement, if any, did he
or she have to endure?  Explain.  If so, who or what offered
the support that had him or her keep at it?

III.      Impact
·      What is the single most important contribution of the subject of
your project?  Why?
·      List any impact attributable to the gender or race of the
innovator.
·      How widespread is the impact?  Explain.
·      How different would the world be without it?  Explain

IV.      Conclusion
·      How important is the innovation today?  Explain.
·      Has it paved the way for subsequent innovations (ones that
came after)?
·      What is being identified as the innovation’s next step?
·      What can you or your group see as being the next step

The information above should be typed out (outline format is fine), and also presented in a powerpoint or prezi presentation. (don't know what prezi is? Check it out! Go to prezi.com and click “create”)

Homework: Depending on how far along students have gotten on their project, they can continue to work on their presentation and gathering information over the course of the week
