Workplace Learning Semester II



Objectives for Today:  
You will be able to explore WHY workplace learning to people outside the walls of Goode; 

you'll also create your own definitions of important soft skills and develop a roadmap for what you want to get out of this class; 

lastly, you'll revisit the expectations for workplace learning with regard to mentoring, projects and presentations



DO NOW (25 minutes): For this survey you will need two windows open, one open to What's Next Illinois and another to the worksheet linked HERE.  Follow the directions on the worksheet and then answer the questions in a google doc entitled "Workplace Learning

You may have already taken the Basic Skills Survey, but as you'll need to record some of the information on this worksheet, take it again and see if you get the same results.

THE WORK!
(15 minutes)

 What's the purpose of Workplace Learning and what do YOU want to get out of this class?  



Watch this video to see if it can help you to define the importance of Workplace Learning


Answer the following questions during the video:

How many young people around the world can't find a job?

What is the major issue that each speaker references?  Why is there a "skills gap"?

What is the answer to closing the skills gap?

This class is designed to help you look at the "soft" skills that you HAVE and the ones that you want to DEVELOP!

NOW, GET TO WORK!

Defining Soft Skills (20 minutes)
Working in groups of 2-3, copy and paste the chart below into your Google Doc and work with your team to define each of the soft skills and give an example....make it a good one because you're going to act it out!

Soft Skills Charades (30 minutes)
Using the examples from above, your teacher will ask one member from your group to act out one of these skills....challenge yourself to get up and act it out! Knowing what it looks like to be a good team member or time manager is the first step to becoming better! 


No matter what each skill looks like to you right now, over this semester we are going to work on developing each of the skills through projects

Expectations for Semester II of Workplace Learning (15 minutes)
  • Mentor communication on a weekly basis that fully responds to the given activity and asks mentors for feedback to help you develop your soft skills (beginning 2/20
  • On March 6, you will begin work on THREE projects.  During these projects you will use what you've learned about yourself, your interests and your skills and bring all of that to a team.
  • Each of these THREE projects will have a final presentation.You will be graded on these projects and presentations and they will all be kept in a portfolio.
  • Your PORTFOLO is a collection of all three projects and the results of each project.  At the end of the year you will look at your portfolio as a whole and see the progress you have made.
